Britain’s trade gap fell dramatically in September to the lowest monthly figure in 3 1/2 years, the government reported today.

The current account deficit declined to $1.67 billion from August’s $2.35 billion, the Central Statistical Office said. It was the first time the trade gap was below $1.96 billion this year.

The improved trade picture was a bonus for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government following other gloomy economic figures recently.
