The president of Cuba’s Journalists’ Union has called for more freedom and openness in Cuban journalism, saying the existing official media have “exhausted its possibilities.”

In an unusually critical analysis of the state media, union leader Julio Garcia Luis said in an interview with the weekly Communist Youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde that official interference, excessive bureaucracy and a false uniformity have broken communication between the Cuban people and its press.

Garcia made clear that he was not advocating the creation of an opposition press or change in Cuba’s one-party Communist system.
