From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Army troops battled suspected Communist guerrillas attempting to burn a passenger bus outside Manila in support of a general strike, leaving four people dead, the military said. The gun battle erupted as the strike by leftist unions fizzled after three days. The unions had been demanding a $1.48 increase in the minimum daily wage of $3.46. President Corazon Aquino said companies cannot afford the raise. Organizers said they would hold another general strike next month when Congress debates the national budget.
