Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev, speaking in Madrid, suggested that Iraq may be softening its position in the gulf crisis and that Baghdad could clarify its intent in coming days. Envoy Yevgeny Primakov was to meet today with Saddam Hussein, while Gorbachev was headed for Paris for a session with President Francois Mitterrand.

A unit of U.S. Marines set up camp with Saudi ground troops, ending weeks of isolation between the two allied forces.
