Gov. Bill Clements cited the opening Monday of a new manufacturing plant in Central Texas by Rohr Industries of Chula Vista, Calif., as evidence that the state’s business climate “is the envy of the nation.”

Speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new plant, Clements said recent surveys indicate “Texas is a top choice of corporate leaders planning for the 21st Century.”

Rohr plant in Texas--A wire service story in the Business section on Tuesday erroneously reported that a new Rohr Industries plant in San Marcos, Tex., is a joint venture with General Electric. Actually, the plant is operated by a wholly owned Rohr Industries subsidiary. The plant’s correct size is 168,000 square feet, not 140,000 square feet, as reported by United Press International.

“Certainly, our lack of a personal or corporate income tax is a precious resource enjoyed by few others,” he said. “And our quality of life, well, we all know it’s top notch.”

Rohr, a Fortune 500 aerospace company, opened the new 140,000-square-foot plant in a joint venture with General Electric. It will eventually employ 250 workers in the production of heat-resistant metallic parts for commercial and military aircraft and engines.

The Rohr subsidiary, Rohr HTA, which opened with 50 workers, will make jet engine nozzle assemblies, in-flight thrust reversers, flaps, fan-exit ducts, doors and panels.

Production work will include metal bonding, fabrication, machining and assembly.

Clements, citing figures produced by the Texas Department of Commerce, said the Rohr plant “will bring 468 direct jobs to our state and trigger indirect work for another 760 Texans.”

“Its investment will boost income growth by $36 million a year and bolster our Texas economy by $146 million,” he said.

Rohr, with 1989 sales of $1.04 billion, designs, manufactures, integrates and supports technologically advanced aircraft engine systems, thrust reversers, plyons, noise-suppression systems and engine components for commercial and military aircraft.

Rohr, which also manufactures solid rocket motor casings and nozzles for the space agency, employs 11,000 workers in 10 facilities in the United States and one in France.
