Ex-Tax Collector Gets Jail for Tax Evasion: A federal judge in Los Angeles sentenced Harold E. Nichols, 61, a former collector in the Orange County tax collector-treasurer’s office, to five years in prison for conspiracy, tax evasion and a charge related to a $2-million gold-fraud scheme that prosecutors said helped him buy a house in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and support a mistress.
