Public’s Help Sought in Motorist’s Slaying

Faced with a dearth of leads after three months of investigation, detectives Monday sought the public’s help in solving the slaying of a man whose car was apparently mistaken for a gang member’s.

Christopher Jones, 21, who was known as “C.J.” to friends, was shot and killed early on Aug. 4 as he and two friends drove through a South San Gabriel neighborhood.

Deputy Rich Erickson said the trio’s white Toyota Corolla may have been misidentified by area gang members as one belonging to a rival, possibly after Jones and his friends drove by a large party.

Jones was riding in the back seat of the car when a bullet ripped through the rear of the vehicle and struck him. Investigators are unsure where the bullets came from.

Erickson said Jones of Temple City had grown up in the South San Gabriel area and may have been showing his friends his old neighborhood.
