WORLD : Life Sentence for Porno Sales
An illiterate woman was sentenced today to life in prison for selling tens of thousands of pornographic books, according to official reports.
The Beijing Evening News said the case involving Li Xiurong, 39, and six others was the largest ever in Beijing of dealing in pornography.
It was the first reported case since China approved strict new laws last week that call for severe penalties, including death, for those who produce or sell pornographic materials.
China has no legal definition of pornography, and anything showing a naked body or even kissing can be considered obscene.
The titles of the books sold by Li reportedly included “The Maiden Who Sold Her Body,” “The Unrestrained, Pampered Sister,” “The Enchanting Maiden” and “The Strangest Things in the World.”
