Ben Johnson Signs for L.A. Meet

Ben Johnson, who was stripped of the gold medal and record he set when he won in the 100-meter dash at the 1988 Olympics after testing positive for steroid use, has signed to run in the Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet Jan. 18 at the Sports Arena.

It will be the first competition in the United States for Johnson since his two-year suspension ended last month.

Johnson set a world record of 9.79 seconds in beating Carl Lewis in the 100-meter final at Seoul. Johnson had lowered the 100-meter world record from 9.93 seconds to 9.83 in the 1987 World Track Championships at Rome, but that mark also was removed from the record books.
