THE SIDELINES : German Soccer Fans Rampage
Luxembourg police detained and deported 40 German soccer fans after a rampage at a European Championships game between Luxembourg and Germany.
Three police officers were injured in fighting with the fans, the German sports news agency SID said. Germany beat Luxembourg, 3-2, Wednesday night in a Group 5 qualifying match for the 1992 European Championships in Sweden.
About 350 Germans forced their way into the stadium without tickets. They demolished a fast-food stand, ripped out plastic seats and hurled bottles and signal flares at the people below. Police were forced to seal off streets leading to the stadium.
On their way to the stadium, the fans also damaged 15 cars.
