WORLD : 50 Killed as India Unrest Grows
Police killed at least 10 Hindus attempting to storm a disputed Muslim mosque today, and more than 40 others died in violence as the religious dispute spread across India to neighboring Muslim countries.
Ten consecutive days of clashes between majority Hindus and minority Muslims have left more than 275 dead in India and at least two dead in predominantly Islamic Bangladesh.
The unrest could also weaken Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh’s chances of surviving a Nov. 7 confidence vote. Singh lost his majority in Parliament after Hindus withdrew from the 11-month-old coalition to protest government handling of the mosque dispute.
