Share

A 27-year-old tile setter has been indicted on murder and robbery charges by the Ventura County grand jury in connection with the July 3 slaying of a Port Hueneme man.

Anthony Eugene Diaz was indicted by the grand jury in the death of Bruce Eugene Pope, 62, who was found in his ransacked condominium, beaten and strangled with a telephone cord. A television, videocassette recorder, computer, camera and cash were missing from Pope’s home.

The indictment charges Diaz with murder and robbery and a special circumstance of murder during a robbery, which would allow prosecutors to seek the death penalty.

Police have said they believe Pope and Diaz met each other by chance and that Diaz was invited to Pope’s condominium.
