British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd, underlining Britain’s isolation in moves toward European integration, said today that a single currency must not be imposed on the European Community.

“In time, if peoples and governments so chose, a common currency could evolve toward a single currency,” he told a conference of the Confederation of British Industry. “But if that happens it will be the result of choice, not imposition.”

His views contrasted with those expressed by the CBI, which has committed itself to a single European currency.
