CYPRESS : Senior Center Plans OKd by City Council
After several years on the drawing board, plans for a $2-million Senior Center have been approved by the City Council.
The plans call for a 17,000-square-foot building at 9031 Grindlay St. The former Cypress High School, which houses the existing senior center, will be demolished.
The building will contain a library, craft and billiards rooms, dining area and exercise facilities.
“This is so exciting,” said Ruth Raheb, recreation services manager. The seniors “have been working on it a long time.”
Since 1985, seniors have been lobbying for a new center. The current site is too small to accommodate many of the existing programs.
About $500,000 has been earmarked for financing the project. The remaining funds have not been set aside, officials said.
Construction is expected to begin next year and be completed in June of 1992.
