Neighbors at Risk

Share

Myron Levin’s article Oct. 8 reveals more alarming facts about the unregulated actions of Valley manufacturers that may be threatening the health of their residential neighbors. The Marquardt Co. of Van Nuys was cited in that article as the eighth greatest releaser of toxic emissions in the Valley.

Now as this same company is applying for a “standard operating permit” to store and treat hazardous wastes at a location that contains nine schools within a two-mile radius and is adjacent to residential areas, it is time for the community to be told the truth.

Before this permit is issued we must demand an independent environmental impact report and health risk assessment. As a “good neighbor,” Marquardt Co. owes us this information and if they won’t offer it voluntarily, it is the obligation of the Department of Health Services to see that these studies are performed to ensure the safety of the community and its children.
