State to Smog Check Diesel Rigs: Attacking the most common public complaint about air pollution, the state Air Resources Board will begin roadside smog checks and a fleet inspection scheme for diesel big-rig trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles throughout the state, much like those required of auto owners. Teams of board inspectors and state Highway Patrol officers expect to test about 38,000 of the dirtiest trucks each year, hoping to reduce by 17% overall emissions from the 250,000 trucks and buses driven in California annually.
