Random Drug Testing of Police Officers OKd

The Los Angeles City Council has approved random drug testing of police officers in a compromise supported by Police Chief Daryl F. Gates and the police union, officials said Thursday.

The plan, approved by the council in a closed session Wednesday, calls for random drug testing of officers with the rank of lieutenant or lower, and also gives officers who complete 20 years of service an additional vacation day and another vacation day after 25 years.

It is a compromise of the original plan, which would have given officers with 30 or more years’ service two additional days of vacation a month.

The compromise must still be approved by Mayor Tom Bradley, who threatened to veto the original proposal. If he approves it, the matter goes to a vote by members of the Police Protection League, the officers’ union.
