Support for Crisis Pregnancies

Share

I would like to respond to Kathy Hunnicutt’s letter (Oct. 16) regarding Life Chain participants. She apparently feels that pro-lifers do not take an interest in women who go through with crisis pregnancies or with their children. This is common rhetoric from pro-abortion activists that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

A woman who is pregnant can receive help ranging from a place to live to the very basics of maternity clothes, baby clothes and furniture from many pro-life organizations. She will also find a shoulder to cry on, counseling for her future and a compassionate, loving response.

Ms. Hunnicutt suggests that Life Chain advocates should adopt all of the children born in crisis circumstances. There is a tremendous list of people who want to adopt, not only perfect white babies, but children who are handicapped, black children, mixed-race children, etc. We get calls and letters at our Pregnancy Counseling Center every day from couples desperately wanting children.

The thing that really bothers me is the fact that the people who believe that society shouldn’t pay for “unwanted children” (that these babies are better off dead) are also the ones who believe that giving a 13-year-old a condom, a pill or an abortion doesn’t encourage sexual activity. What person in his or her right mind can’t figure out that our teen pregnancy epidemic is due to increased sexual activity. Teens (and many young adults in their 20s) are not capable of controlling their lives in a mature manner or making commitments to one another, including using contraceptives faithfully.
