Jury Votes for Life Term in Murder of LAPD Officer

A jury on Friday spared the life of a reputed gang member who murdered a police officer in 1988, recommending that the man spend the rest of his life in prison.

The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated for 2 hours and 15 minutes in the penalty phase of Kirkton P. Moore’s murder trial before rejecting the prosecution’s request that they recommend the death penalty.

Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor scheduled sentencing for Dec. 18.

Moore, 29, was convicted Oct. 24 of first-degree murder in the slaying of plainclothes officer Daniel Pratt, the first Los Angeles police officer to be killed in an incident stemming from a gang-related drive-by shooting.

Moore was also found guilty of killing Moore while the officer was on duty, a special circumstance allegation that qualified him for the death sentence.
