Downey : Water Fee Increased 6%; Trash Rate Goes Up 10%
The Downey City Council on Tuesday voted to raise fees for water by 6% and trash service by 10%.
The average single-family homeowner will pay about 52 cents more per month for water, said W.A. Ralph, director of public works. The city expects to receive $366,000 in additional revenue from the rate hike. The rate was increased to make up for the higher cost of providing water, including improvements in the municipal water system, Ralph said.
The fee for trash disposal will increase about 77 cents for single-family residences. Rising landfill disposal fees and other cost increases prompted the city to raise the rates, Ralph said.
The trash pickup rate is now in effect and the water fee hike will start Jan. 1.
