Baltic Ministers Barred at Summit
The foreign ministers of the three Baltic republics were barred entry Monday to the 34-nation European summit, apparently because of Soviet objections.
The ministers from the breakaway Soviet republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia had been in Paris since Thursday, lobbying for a formal role in the three-day Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.
They reported receiving encouragement from several participating countries, including the United States, to attend either as official observers or as “special guests” of France.
On Monday, the World Federation of Free Latvians said that France had withdrawn its invitation because of Soviet objections.
The three Baltic officials were Lennart Meri of Estonia, Algirdas Saudargas of Lithuania and Janis Jurkans of Latvia.
