Car Makers Announce Cutbacks: The Big Three auto makers said they will temporarily idle at least a dozen plants next week and beyond to trim bloated stocks of unsold cars and trucks, affecting more than 36,000 workers. Industry leader General Motors Corp. plans to temporarily close at least six U.S. plants next week because of high supplies of unsold cars and vans. Several of those GM plants, including its Van Nuys facility, have already been idled since early November due to lackluster sales.
