From Times Wire Services

Lloyds Bank PLC said today it has cut 2,000 staff this year as part of an ongoing review of its banking operations.

The cuts came mostly through natural attrition and early retirement throughout the company, including head office staff, it said.

Lloyds, one of Britain’s largest commercial banks, currently employs 55,000.

Further job cuts are expected in the future, but the exact numbers haven’t been decided, said a spokesman, who was not identified in keeping with bank practice.

Other British banks also have been trimming staff and consolidating branch networks in a bid to reduce operating costs and bolster profitability.
