LAKE CASITAS : 2 Mountain Bike Races Scheduled
Lake Casitas Recreation Area will be the site of mountain bike races on Sunday and Dec. 16 that will follow a course along the lake shoreline and campground areas.
The off-road course will feature gentle grades and flat terrain. About 75 to 100 riders are expected to participate in several racing classes that range from younger than 17 to older than 45.
Sign-ups will begin at 8 a.m., with the races for all classes starting at 9 a.m. Race fees are $20 per person.
“Casitas hopes to make these races a continuing activity at the lake in an attempt to attract new and diverse sporting events,” said Richard H. Hajas, assistant general manager of the Casitas Municipal Water District, which oversees the operation of the lake and campground.
Recently the lake, which was the site of the 1984 Olympic rowing and canoeing events, hosted a North-South Intersectional Regatta featuring college sailing teams from Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.
The first mountain bike race was held at the lake last April.
The course offers spectator viewing from several locations along the route, Hajas said.
