CASITAS PASS : Weather Station Aids Irrigation

Share

A new weather station on the west side of Casitas Pass is helping fruit growers determine how much water to use on their crops.

The Casitas Municipal Water District has installed the station in Rincon Valley about one mile east of the Ventura Freeway and about 260 feet southeast of California 150. Rancher Duncan H. Abbott agreed to let the district use a 100-square-foot plot of land for the station at no charge.

The computerized system gives growers evapo-transpiration (ET) data from which they calculate their irrigation needs. Growers can telephone an ET hot line for daily readings or buy a computer program to get hourly updates.

It is part of a network of more than 100 weather stations in California that feed data to the state Department of Water Resources in Sacramento.
