Nissan to Make Airbags Standard Equipment: Nissan Motor Co. said it will offer driver-side air bags in most of its U.S. cars by 1992 as standard equipment, with all Nissan cars sold in the United States to have the inflatable safety device by 1993. Nissan will start offering passenger-side air bags in early 1992 and expand their availability to nearly all U.S. models by 1994. Nissan also said it will offer both passenger- and driver-side air bags on its commercial vehicles by the mid-1990s, including its pickup trucks, which are built at its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant.
