Purdue Coach Gene Keady will lead the U.S. basketball team in the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba, officials announced today.

The recommendation of Keady by USA Basketball, the national governing body, still must be approved by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Keady, 54, called his selection the “second-highest honor in coaching next to the Olympics.” He said he is excited about the challenge and noted that the U.S. team is “going to feel the heat because we haven’t won a gold medal recently.”

The U.S. team lost to Brazil in the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis and also lost the gold medal in the last Olympic Games.

Keady, entering his 11th season as Purdue’s coach, has amassed a record of 215-93 at the school.

He said he expects tryouts for the Pan Am team to be conducted in April or early May in Colorado Springs, Colo.
