Supervisors Support Olive View Settlement

Share

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday endorsed a $3-million settlement with two firms for defects in the design of Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar.

The county filed a lawsuit against four firms in 1986 after officials discovered that the nearly completed county hospital was riddled with design flaws.

It cost the county $4.8 million to correct the problems, according to records.

The two firms that reached a settlement with the county are Syska & Hennessey Inc. and Welton Becket Associates Inc.

The other two defendants haven’t settled their cases.

Problems cited by the county included a sophisticated exhaust system that did not work properly and a miscalculation on how much hot and cold water would be needed to heat and cool the medical facility.

The proposed settlement must still be approved by the Los Angeles County Health Facilities Authority.
