COUNTYWIDE : PORT HUENEME : Campfire Latchkey Program Approved

Share

A program for latchkey children will be started at Bard Elementary School in Port Hueneme by the Ventura County Council Campfire, following an agreement reached Monday with the Hueneme Elementary School District.

The agreement allows the council to lease space at the school and set up two 40-by-24-foot portable classrooms, which each accommodate about 26 children, Campfire Director Susan Englund said.

The classrooms are being provided by the state Department of Education at a cost of $70,000 apiece. The child-care program is expected to begin by January. Englund said the program is designed to assist low-income families, and fees will vary depending on the parents’ income.

The program, the third in the Hueneme Elementary School District, will operate until 6 p.m.

The Campfire council has been providing care for school-age children at Hueneme and Haycox elementary schools since 1986.
