COUNTYWIDE : Drunk Drivers to Meet With Victims

Share

In a campaign aimed at Orange County’s Latino community, state safety officials this evening will sponsor a rare bilingual meeting between drunk-driving offenders and families of alcohol-related accident victims.

The bilingual panel is part of a two-year program initiated by the state Office of Traffic Safety to raise awareness among Latinos of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

In 1989, of 336,059 people arrested for drunk driving in California, 38% were Latino, according to data gathered by the traffic safety office.

Los Angeles and Orange counties contained among the highest number of persons killed, injured or involved in alcohol-related accidents.

Many DUI offenders are required to attend victims’ panels as a part of their court sentence. At the meetings, victims of DUI-related accidents describe the tragic consequences of drinking and driving.

Tonight’s panel, also sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Costa Mesa council chambers, 77 Fair Drive, across the street from the Orange County Fairgrounds.
