Science / Medicine : ‘Carlin Giant’ Dinosaur Found

An expedition in Wyoming has discovered gigantic bones that were described last week as the remains from the largest cetiosaur dinosaur ever unearthed. The excavation team led by noted paleontologist Robert Bakker of the University of Colorado at Boulder said bones from the beast--nicknamed the “Carlin Giant”--show that it measured 70 feet long with a 25-foot-long tail.

Bakker said it was the largest member ever found of the cetiosaur family, giant plant-eating creatures that roamed the world millions of years ago but which were smaller than their heavier, longer-necked cousins, the brontosaurs.

He said the cetiosaur bones found in July appeared to be the last in the line of cetiosaurs that died about 140 million years ago during the Jurassic Period.
