British Airways said today it is seeking to create a Berlin-based airline that would compete with the German carrier Lufthansa.

Such an airline, which aims to turn Berlin into a hub, could expand greatly in coming years by providing East-West European air services and feeding into long-haul transcontinental flights.

British Airways would hold a 49% stake in the new carrier, and unspecified German investors would own the rest, said a British Airways spokeswoman.

The new airline, as yet unnamed, isn’t expected to begin operating until 1993. The British carrier has been spurred to seek such a deal by German unification, which effectively forces foreign carriers out of Germany by 1993.
