World IN BRIEF : IRELAND : President Sworn In, Calls for Tolerance

Ireland’s first woman president, Mary Robinson, was inaugurated in a ceremony at Dublin Castle, after which she extended a hand to both Protestants and Catholics in troubled, British-ruled Northern Ireland. The 46-year-old lawyer said she will represent a “new Ireland.” Robinson, a Roman Catholic who married a Protestant, said: “ . . . I will seek to encourage mutual understanding and tolerance between all the different communities sharing this island.”
