Kasparov Wins, Gains Edge in Chess Tourney

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

World champion Gary Kasparov took a commanding lead Tuesday in the 1990 world chess championship match in Lyon, France. By winning the adjourned 16th game against former champion Anatoly Karpov, Kasparov now leads the 24-game match, 8 1/2-7 1/2.

Kasparov’s victory, only the third decisive result in the match, greatly increases his chances of remaining champion for three more years. Karpov needs to win at least two games to dethrone Kasparov, because Kasparov will retain his title if the match ends in a 12-12 tie.

The 16th game, one of the longest in championship history, lasted 102 moves and more than 12 hours. Kasparov had the advantage in the first session of play Saturday, then Karpov fought back Sunday to reach a position with good prospects of a draw. But Tuesday, Kasparov managed to invade with his king, setting up threats of checkmate, and Karpov resigned.
