Karpov Stuns Kasparov in 17th Game to Tie Championship Match

Challenger Anatoly Karpov came back to stun reigning world chess champion Gary Kasparov with a 40-move victory in the 17th game of their title match Wednesday.

The outcome tied the 24-game contest at 8 1/2 points each with 2 wins apiece and 13 draws.

The dramatic result renewed Karpov’s hopes for the title and came on the heels of a Kasparov victory in the 102-move-long 16th game.

The next game is scheduled for Saturday with Kasparov playing white and having the advantage of the first move.
