LONDON —
A British license plate spelling ELVIS fetched $132,000 at auction today.
Businessman Anson Lane, 47, bought the plate ELV 1S for the price of a small London apartment even though he said he did not own a car to go with it.
“I have a leased company car so now I will have to go out and buy a car of my own. A pink Cadillac would seem appropriate,” he said.
The status-conscious rich in Britain can pay the price of an average saloon car for the privilege of a personalized license plate, and the government has been cashing in by selling unique numbers that were previously withheld.
License plates are made up of officially issued letters and figures.
