Wick Communications has named Jon Fishman, 48, of Green Valley, Ariz., as publisher of the Ojai Valley News. He will succeed Darrow (Duke) Tully on Jan. 15, to manage business operations of the paper that circulates 6,500 copies three times a week to readers throughout the Ojai Valley.

For the past 10 years, Fishman has been publisher and part owner of the Green Valley News and Sun, a twice-weekly newspaper with a circulation of about 9,000 in the community of 20,000 people south of Tucson.

“He’s an excellent publisher. We’re really sorry to see him go,” said the News and Sun’s managing editor, Kathy Engle.

After working for Antioch and Concord newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area, Fishman held executive positions with four other Arizona newspapers.

He has acquired several dozen state awards for editorial excellence, including the 1990 Presidential Award, the highest award given by the Arizona Newspaper Assn., Engle said.

Tully recently resigned from Wick Communications to head a separate chain of daily newspapers near Boston, Mass.

He became publisher of the Ojai Valley News in 1987 when the Arizona chain bought the 100-year-old newspaper from the Volz family.
