Now you can’t even buy a Christmas tree without feeling guilty. Or, possibly, un-American.

“Ever wonder what happens to Christmas trees once the ornaments are taken down, the lights are unplugged and the branches have turned brown and brittle?” asks the Air Quality Management District. “Many are put into smoky open bonfires, which cause air pollution.”

The agency, in fact, recommends an artificial tree over a cut tree.

This logic stumps the National Christmas Tree Assn., which points out that not only are artificial trees mostly manufactured in Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, but they “consist of non-biodegradable plastics and metals.”

Graceland, which owns the right to the singer’s name, said it also wants the former Rose Parade float, now on display in the Cash for Cans scrap yard in Jackson, Miss.

No dollar figures have been mentioned yet, but sculptors Ralph Eaton and Brett Waller said they’re willing to go as high as $75 for the bust. They want to place it in a shed lined with Elvis wallpaper and filled with original Elvis-inspired art works. They call it their Voodoo Elvis Barn.

Incidentally, we previously reported that the Mississippi Tournament of Roses Assn. had sold the King’s skull to Cash for Cans for $13.75. The actual price was $13.80.
