Bomb Found Near Air Base Dispensary

Asmall bomb was found near a medical facility used by space shuttle astronauts at Edwards Air Force Base near Lancaster, NASA officials said Thursday.

NASA spokesman Don Haley said the bomb, which had no fuse, posed no immediate danger, and NASA officials believe it was unrelated to “anything connected with the space shuttle,” which landed at Edwards on Monday night.

The device, a cylinder less than a foot long filled with gunpowder, was discovered Wednesday by an aerospace company employee working at the Ames-Dryden Flight Research facility, Haley said.

It was found on the ground less than 20 feet from the dispensary used by NASA employees on a daily basis and by shuttle astronauts following landings.

Offices of NASA contractors are also in that area, he said.
