From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Kader Siddiqi, a hero of Bangladesh’s independence struggle, returned home from a 15-year exile to a tumultuous welcome and pledged to help restore democracy to the South Asia nation. Tens of thousands swarmed over Dhaka’s airport to greet Siddiqi--known as “the Tiger” for his guerrilla exploits in the 1971 war against Pakistan--upon his return from Calcutta. He had been sentenced in absentia to life in prison for killing an army major and several other soldiers in a 1975 revolt.
