Sahara Club and Desert Environmentalists

The vociferous reactionaries like Rick Sieman and the Sahara Club may be a refreshing form of entertainment both to themselves and in the media, but nothing in their message is useful in preserving wilderness nor the environment. Early pioneering environmentalists learned long ago that a most effective method of promoting conservation of natural areas was to use facts about the environment, not inflammatory tirades aimed toward persons and/or groups who strive to solve problems.

Statements from the Sahara Club Newsletter regarding damage from the Exxon Valdez oil spill as being reversible are shortsighted and lack reasonable research. The fear is not last year’s count of fish and wildlife damage but for the next 20 years. MICHAEL TOMPANE
