A two-officer bicycle patrol started full-time operation last week in shopping areas, apartment complexes and business districts.

The two patrol officers--wearing tennis shoes, riding pants and water-resistant jacket--showed off their new bikes during a City Council meeting Monday.

Police Chief Byron Nelson said Azusa is one of 40 U.S. cities with bicycle patrols.

The program is not “just an amusing novelty” Nelson told the council. “It will be a powerful tool in preventing crime.”
