Three men accused of beating up San Diego Chargers lineman Joe Phillips will go on trial March 19.

Brett Dost, 21, David Hanna, 22, and Scott Stewart, 25, pleaded not guilty Thursday before San Diego Superior Court Judge Jesus Rodriguez, who set the trial date.

Phillips, 27, was assaulted outside a Mission Bay restaurant in the early morning of Sept. 26. He has had surgery to repair facial damages and now has a financial dispute with the Chargers over his pay while he was recuperating.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Mark Pettine said he filed two new misdemeanor charges of assault Thursday against Hanna involving two other victims.

Pettine said Kimberly Judson, a woman accompanying Phillips as he was leaving the restaurant, and a witness to the attack on Phillips, Zack Carillo, also were assaulted.

The felony charges involve assaulting Phillips with force to cause great bodily injury.

The motive for the incident has never been clear, but Phillips has said it was an “unprovoked” attack. He did not testify at the preliminary hearing.

All three are on free on bail on the condition that they have no contact with Phillips.
