Host UCSD Women Win Their Tournament Opener

Lisa Beaver scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds to lead UC San Diego to a 59-45 victory over Wheaton College (Mass.) in the first round of the three-day UCSD women’s basketball tournament at UCSD Friday.

Cari Young added 14 points and led UCSD with 14 rebounds. Sue Lankford scored 11 points and Steph Higgins and Jen Landry each had nine for Wheaton (5-2).

UCSD (5-3) had a 28-24 halftime lead.

St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.) built on a 11-point halftime lead to defeat William Smith Colleg (Geneva, N.Y.), 91-49. Laurie Trow scored 27 points and Suzi Bouquet and Ellen Hanson each scored 15 for St. Thomas. Jill Brower led William Smith with 15 points.

Millikin (Decatur, Ill.) came back from a six-point deficit at halftime to defeat Smith College (North Hampton, Mass.), 93-79. Smith College, which took a 37-31 halftime lead, was led by Phoebe Jacob with 27 points. Barb Blume scored 19 points for Millikin.

University of Scranton (Penn.) defeated Carroll College (Wisc.), 47-43. Karri Sears led Carroll with 14 points.

San Diego State defeated visiting UC-Riverside, 94-61. Michelle Miles led SDSU with 31 points. Kieishsha Garnes added 19 points and led the Aztecs (5-4) with 11 points. UC-Riverside (7-7) was led by Wendy Fleischer with 35.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Neil Derrick scored 27 points to lead Washington State to a 103-78 victory over UC San Diego in Pullman, Wash. The Tritons (8-3) were led by Tim Rapp’s 20 points and nine rebounds, while Gordon McNeill scored 12 points. Washington State also got 20 points from Terrence Lewis, 16 from Bennie Seltzer and 10 rebounds from Ken Critton.

The Cougars blew the game open midway through the first half, scoring 10 unanswered points to take a 28-13 lead. Derrick scored eight of those 10 points.

The Cougars never trailed and led by as many as 32 points late in the second half.

It was the third time Washington State topped the 100-point mark this season and the first time in 25 years the Cougars have had three 100-plus games in a single season.

Point Loma Nazarene College won its second round game by defeating Northwest Nazarene (Nampa, Ida.), 80-69, in the Nazarene College Holiday Classic at Olathe, Kan. PLNC (7-4) was led by Frank Dews with 22 points and Mark Bulgin with 21. John Greer added 13 points and led the team with 12 rebounds. PLNC was 26 for 30 from the free throw line and Dews went six for six.

Rick Sulvason scored 18 points and Mark Smith added 12 for Northwest (3-9).
