Riley’s Short Life

These are exciting times. Man seems to be awakening from a complacent, self-centered sleep.

I’m not just referring to the scientific and technological progress of mankind, but ethical and moral, and maybe even spiritual.

I refer to the fact that in a major newspaper such as yours, the sad plight of the obscure life and unnecessary death of a little dog named Riley could be the prime subject of Tony Perry’s column.

Perhaps we are at last realizing our true place in the universe, that we are connected to and must be in touch with other creatures on this planet if we are to survive as whole human beings.
