1990 in Review : Playa del Rey : Playa Vista Project Awaits Impact Report

Preparation of an environmental impact report on the multibillion-dollar Playa Vista project is running behind schedule, and the draft document will not be available for public review until spring at the earliest.

Playa Vista senior partner Nelson C. Rising said consultants are working on the report, which will identify the consequences of building the proposed city-within-a-city between Marina del Rey and the Westchester Bluffs.

Although work on the environmental impact report proceeds, negotiations are continuing between Playa Vista’s developer, Maguire Thomas Partners, and Los Angeles County officials over plans for a new small-craft harbor, south of Marina del Rey.

Altogether, Maguire Thomas plans to build 5 million square feet of office space, 11,750 apartments and condominiums, 720,000 square feet of retail space, 2,400 hotel rooms, 25,000 parking spaces and the marina with 750 boat slips.

More than a quarter of the 957-acre property, most of which was part of the estate of industrialist Howard Hughes, will be restored as wetlands under terms of a legal settlement announced in October by the developer and the environmental group, Friends of Ballona Wetlands.
