Libraries : VILLA PARK : A Novel Problem: Too Many Books

Share

A holiday surge in the number of books donated to the library has pleasantly surprised workers there, who are trying to find space for them in the already crowded shelves, officials said.

Librarian Jean Thompson said the library, which does not actively solicit books, usually receives around 25 a month, but recent donations have totaled more than 200.

“These are new books and not the kind that you have lying around the house for four years and finally got around to getting rid of them. We don’t have room for all of the books that are donated, that’s why we need the new space,” she said, referring to proposals to expand the library building on the present site at 17865 Santiago Blvd.

Also, because the books donated are relatively new, they also offer an insight into what Villa Park residents are reading: “Around 98% of (the books) are fiction. Low romance, but a lot of mysteries and espionage and best-sellers.”
