Huskies Roll By Iowa in Highest Scoring Game

Share

Quarterback Mark Brunell of Santa Maria ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as eighth-ranked Washington held off No. 17 Iowa, 46-34, Tuesday at Pasadena in the highest-scoring Rose Bowl game in history.

Several hours later in Miami, top-ranked Colorado staked its claim for its first national championship in a sport other than skiing by outlasting fifth-ranked Notre Dame, 10-9, in the Orange Bowl.

Despite its victory at Pasadena, Washington (10-2) has no shot at the national championship. Ranked No. 2 heading into their next-to-last game of the regular season, the Huskies dropped out of contention with a 25-22 loss to UCLA.

The previous Rose Bowl scoring record was set in 1963, when USC beat Wisconsin, 42-37.

Washington rolled to a 33-7 halftime lead as Coach Don James improved his record to 3-1 in Rose Bowl games. Iowa (8-4) scored 20 points in the fourth quarter but finished the season with losses in three of its last four games and gave Coach Hayden Fry an 0-3 Rose Bowl record.

In the Citrus Bowl at Orlando, Fla., second-ranked Georgia Tech (11-0-1), the only undefeated team in the country, made its bid for the national championship with a 45-21 victory over No. 19 Nebraska (9-3).

Fourth-ranked Miami (10-2) was the most impressive team of the day in a 46-3 rout of No. 3 Texas in the Cotton Bowl at Dallas.

In the Sugar Bowl, tenth-ranked Tennessee rallied from a 16-0 halftime deficit to beat Virginia, 23-22, at New Orleans. The Volunteers (9-2-2) scored the winning touchdown on Tony Thompson’s one-yard run with 31 seconds left.

Thompson rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

It was the third time in the last five games that Virginia (8-4), which climbed to No. 1 midway through the season but was unranked by bowl time, led by at least 14 points at halftime and lost.

Elvis Grbac passed for four touchdowns to lead No. 12 Michigan (9-3) to a 35-3 victory over No. 15 Mississippi in the Gator Bowl at Jacksonville, Fla.

In the Hall of Fame Bowl at Tampa, Fla., No. 14 Clemson (10-2) cruised past No. 16 Illinois, 30-0.

Browning Nagle passed for 223 of his 451 yards in the first quarter as No. 18 Louisville (10-1-1) downed No. 25 Alabama, 34-7, in the Fiesta Bowl at Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinals were making their first bowl appearance in 13 years.

In the Orange Bowl, Colorado survived a scare when a 91-yard punt return for an apparent touchdown by Raghib (Rocket) Ismail of Notre Dame was nullified by a clipping penalty in the final minute.

The victory apparently clinched the national title for the Buffaloes (11-1-1), a goal that eluded them last season when they were beaten by Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl.

Every top-ranked team that has won a bowl game has been crowned national champion, so it would be a major break with tradition if Colorado doesn’t finish No. 1 when the final polls are released today.

Backup quarterback Charles Johnson, who scored the winning touchdown in Colorado’s infamous fifth-down victory over Missouri earlier this season, took over for injured Darian Hagan with Notre Dame (9-3) holding a 6-3 lead at halftime.
