Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Eastern Airlines to Rehire 60 Strikers
Eastern Airlines said in Miami that it will comply with a federal court ruling and rehire 60 union pilots who went on strike in March, 1989. The court ruling said Eastern must rehire up to 800 pilots who, when the strike ended that November, were told that they had been replaced by new employees. It has already recalled 140 pilots. A district judge rejected Eastern’s contention that it did not have to rehire the strikers, but the airline said that none of the pilots hired during the strike would be laid off. The pilots’ union said the recalled fliers would be assigned as co-pilots or engineers.
