Nation IN BRIEF : MISSOURI : Court OKs Burning in Dioxin Cleanup
A federal court in St. Louis approved plans to burn dioxin-contaminated soil from 28 eastern Missouri communities in a temporary incinerator to be built in the Times Beach area. U.S. District Judge John F. Nangle rejected two neighboring towns’ arguments that burning the carcinogenic chemical would endanger public health. Barney Nelson, mayor of Eureka, Mo., one of the opponents, said further efforts would only waste taxpayers’ money. The state must hold public hearings before permits to build the incinerator can be granted. The cleanup of Times Beach and 27 other sites in Missouri is expected to take seven years and cost at least $80 million.
